ABOUT MELISSA

Exercise specialist.
Human first.

[BIO TO CONFIRM] Melissa McLaren is a HPCSA-registered biokineticist based at the DSD Center in Somerset West. Originally from East London — where she spent 12 years working with athletes and an active coastal population — she relocated to the Helderberg and built a practice around the full spectrum of what biokinetics can offer.

Her training goes beyond the standard degree. Additional qualifications in oncology exercise (one of very few practitioners in Somerset West), pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation, and chronic disease management make her practice genuinely uncommon.

The practice operates from the DSD Center in Croydon, with additional sessions available at Sitari Country Estate and De Velde Lifestyle Estate for residents.

Every patient is different. Programs are adapted to the type of cancer, treatment stage, side effects, and current function. The goal is always to maintain as much quality of life as possible during treatment, and rebuild it fully afterward.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions, answered.

A biokineticist is an exercise specialist registered with the HPCSA — specialising in using exercise as a medical and rehabilitative tool. While physiotherapists primarily treat acute injuries with manual therapy, biokineticists take over in the final rehabilitation phase, using scientifically prescribed exercise to restore function, prevent re-injury, and manage chronic conditions. Think of it as the bridge between medical treatment and long-term health.

Biokinetics is a recognised allied health profession, meaning most major medical aid schemes include it as a claimable benefit. We actively partner with Discovery Vitality, Discovery Diabetes Care, Medscheme programmes, and BestMed. For other schemes, most comprehensive plans cover 8-12 visits annually. Bring your card to your first session and we'll advise on your specific cover.

No referral is required to book. You can come directly. If your case involves post-surgery rehabilitation, your surgeon or treating doctor may provide guidelines, which we'll incorporate into your program.

Comfortable, flexible clothing you can exercise in. Good training shoes. Your medical aid card and ID. Any relevant reports, scans, letters from treating doctors or surgeons. If you're a chronic disease patient, bring a current medication list.

It depends entirely on your case. Acute post-op rehab typically runs 8-12 weeks of weekly sessions. Chronic disease management is usually ongoing monthly or bi-monthly. Sports performance conditioning is goal-driven. Melissa will give you a realistic estimate after your first assessment — not session by session.

Yes. All group classes — including Back & Core, Prenatal, Postnatal, and Strength — are designed to be scalable to different fitness levels. You won't be left behind, and programs are adapted to where each individual is.

The main practice is at the DSD Center, 4 Croydon Avenue, Croydon, Somerset West. Sitari Country Estate and De Velde Lifestyle Estate residents also have access to sessions within their estates — contact us to confirm availability.

Exercise is a key component of any sustainable weight management approach. We work with patients on body composition, strength, cardiovascular fitness, and habit-building. We also actively participate in the Bonitas Weight Management Programme through Medscheme, and Discovery Vitality fitness assessments.
